Abstract

RICULTURE in the Federal Republic of Germany is inefficient in its use of land, labor, and capital. Yet this inefficiency is not entirely the result of conservatism among farmers. Modem machinery is not lacking; indeed, it is common to see specialized and expensive machines parked outside the old farm buildings that are cramped in large, densely built-up villages. Many farmers have considerable technical experience and ability. The problem is an outdated agrarian structure, which makes it difficult to apply capital and labor efficiently. The reform of the farming structure is today being urgently reconsidered in the light of competition within the European Economic Community and of the slow progress that has so far been made.
