Abstract

X-band ( approximately=9.25 GHz) EPR measurements on single crystals of Gd3+-doped Sm(BrO3)3.9H2O (SmBR) and Nd(BrO3)3.9H2O (NdBR) have been performed in the temperature range 4-295 K. It is found that the crystals of SmBR and NdBR undergo structural phase transitions of second order at 38.5 K and 29K, respectively. The spin-Hamiltonian parameters for one of the two magnetically inequivalent Gd3+ ions in the unit cell have been estimated, using a least-squares fitting program, at 295, 115, and 30 K for SmBR, and at 295, 140, and 60 K for NdBR. The general features of the EPR spectra for the two crystals are the same over the temperature range investigated; the absolute value of the zero-field splitting parameter, b20, increases as the temperature is decreased.
