Abstract

Due to the structural efficiency and aesthetically pleasing appearance tubular members are often used in structural applications such as buildings, roof supporting systems, offshore platforms etc. Elliptical hollow section (EHS) combines the architectural qualities of circular hollow section (CHS) and the structural advantages of rectangular hollow section (RHS). Thus, the elliptical hollow section members have been used recently as structural supporting members in different types of structures. The study consists of the numerical validation of structural performance of cold-formed steel elliptical hollow section column buckled about the minor axis. For numerical investigation finite element software ANSYS workbench is utilized. There are no other studies conducted on cold formed steel elliptical hollow section subjected to impact loading. So, the study is further extended to analyse the effect of impact on these columns. The parametric study is conducted by changing the impact velocity and by analysing the effect of impact on different eccentric height along the column length.
