Abstract

High-quality crystalline CdS/Bi2S3 core–shell nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple chemical method in air. X-ray diffraction results showed that the CdS/Bi2S3 nanocomposite was a mixture of cubic and orthorhombic structures. The photoluminescence properties of the CdS/Bi2S3 core–shell nanocomposites were improved with respect to the Bi2S3 shell thickness. High-resolution transmission electron microscopic image of the CdS/Bi2S3 confirmed the formation of core–shell structure. Enhanced photoluminescence emission was obtained in the red region for the CdS/Bi2S3 core–shell nanoparticles, which was entirely different from the ideal CdS and Bi2S3 compound. Also, well-crystallized CdO/Bi2O3 composite was thermally prepared by oxidation of CdS/Bi2S3 in air.
