Abstract

Diprotonated salt of bis(4-methoxyanilinium) adipate [2(C7H10NO) +·(C6H8O2)−] has been synthesized and its crystal has grown by solvent evaporation technique. Good quality of the grown crystal is subjected to single-crystal XRD and powder XRD analyses; it revealed the molecular arrangements, formation of hydrogen bonds, and crystalline nature. The grown crystal crystallizes in a triclinic crystal system, $$P\bar{1}$$ space group with Z = 2. Decomposition and thermal behavior have been analyzed by TG–DTA measurements. The mechanical properties and dielectric behavior have been investigated from Vickers microhardness analysis and LCR meter. Optical transmittance spectrum was recorded and the optical bandgap has been calculated by Tauc plot. Furthermore, grown crystal has been characterized for third-harmonic generation by Z-Scan technique. The calculated nonlinear refractive index (n2), nonlinear absorption coefficient (β), and nonlinear optical susceptibility (χ3) values of the grown single crystal were 7.10 × 10−8 cm2/W, 0.05 × 10−4 cm/W, and 10.09 × 10−6 esu, respectively. The self-defocusing behavior is performed by the positive value of the nonlinear refractive index. The nonlinear absorption coefficient value indicates that 4MAA crystal is an efficient optical limiter.
