Abstract

The structural, magnetic and microscopic physical properties of Nd 2Fe 17− x Mn x compounds have been investigated in this paper by X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurement and Mössbauer spectra analyses. All investigated Nd 2Fe 17− x Mn x compounds ( x=0–8.0) crystallize in the Th 2Zn 17 structure. Substitution of Mn for Fe causes a monotonic decrease of the Curie temperature of the Nd 2Fe 17− x Mn x compounds. The saturation magnetization of the Nd 2Fe 17− x Mn x compounds decreases with increasing Mn content. The average isomer shifts decrease on Mn substitution. The quadrupole splittings over four Fe sites and the average quadrupole splittings change with Mn concentration in magnitude and/or sign. The hyperfine fields over four Fe sites and the average hyperfine fields decrease monotonically with increasing Mn concentration.
