Abstract

Small-scale and large-scale structures of three episodes of folding in an area of Dalradian rocks are described. The structures associated with each episode are differentiated by their respective styles and trends. Nappe folds of Caledonoid trend, occasionally associated with slides, are found to control the present distribution of the formations while later folds of varying style on oblique axes cause culminations and depressions of the plunge of the nappes. On either side of a zone of vertical rocks (the Vertical Belt) the nappes “close” in opposite directions while showing contrasting types of tectonics. The results obtained in the area are compared with those described from neighbouring areas.
