Abstract
The trans-alcoholysis reaction between Sn(O-t-Bu)4 and an excess of HO-i-Bu results in quantitative formation of [Sn(O-i-Bu) 4·H0-i-Bu] 2. This compound was structurally characterized in solution by 1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR spectroscopy and in the solidstate by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular structure consists of an edge-shared bi-octahedral Sn 2 unit with an intramolecular hydrogen bridge between the coordinated alcohol and metal alkoxide. The dynamic behaviour of this compound was studied in solution and revealed the presence of an intramolecular proton exchange process that was fast on the NMR time-scale.
