Abstract
Cell-wall polysaccharides of the bamboo shoot of Moso-chiku were fractionated by successive extraction with ammonium oxalate-oxalic acid, 4% potassium hydroxide, and 24% potassium hydroxide. A β- d-glucan and a xyloglucan were obtained from the 4% potassium hydroxide extract and the 24% potassium hydroxide extract, respectively. Methylation analysis and enzymic-degradation studies of the polysaccharides showed that the former was built up predominantly of repeating-oligosaccharide units of 3- O-β-cellobiosyl- d-glucose and 3- O-β-cellotriosyl- d-glucose in 2:1 molar ratio, and the latter had repeating-oligosaccharide units of α- d-xylopyranosyl-(1→6)-β- d-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-[α- d-xylopyranosyl-(1→6)]-β- d-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)- d-glucose, α- d-xylopyranosyl-(1→6)-β- d-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)- d-glucose and cellobiose.
