Abstract

Based on the engineering fracture parameter CTOA, a new approach to the structural integrity assessment for non- J-controlled crack growth is proposed in the present paper. When the crack propagation is in the situation of J-controlled crack growth, the single curve assessment method for ductile fracture is investigated to predict the safety of engineering structures by means of the Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD). In terms of J ̃ 1- integral and CTOA, structural integrity assessment is also studied for non- J-controlled crack growth. In this new approach, the J-integral and CTOA are combined to establish the fracture criterion. Compact tension (CT) specimens, which are made of ductile steel A533B, are studied by the test and EPRI elastic-plastic fracture analysis. According to the combining criterion of J-integral and CTOA, the assessment of CT specimens is done and the result shows that this approach for ductile fracture gives reasonable prediction.
