Abstract

AbstractThe impacts of the values of phase shifts and the corresponding phase‐shift positions (PSP) on the spontaneous emission spectra of a three‐phase‐shift (3PS) distributed feedback (DFB) laser have been analyzed at below threshold. Side‐mode suppression of more than 25 dB is achieved with a proper selection of phase shifts and their positions. The use of the transfer matrix method (TMM) in the analysis reveals promising potential for improving and optimizing the structural design of the 3PS DFB lasers in both the below and lasing threshold applications. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
