Abstract

The structure needs to be monitored after periodic time in its service life. SHM refers to be the process of implementing a damage detection and characterization strategy for engineering structures. This helps to lead a cost-effective management and can also help to increase the service life of the structure. Civil engineering structures pose certain challenges while monitoring due to its large dimensions and different types of materials. The structural health monitoring is a term increasingly used in the last decade to describe the range of systems implemented on full-scale civil infrastructure and whose purpose is to assist and inform operator about continued 'fitness for purpose' of structure used under various loads. Use of sensors in structural health monitoring is the advanced method of investigating a civil engineering structure. In particular, PZT sensors and ADXL 335 sensors can serve as both actuators and sensors, which make SHM to be active monitoring system. In this study, the application of sensors for SHM of civil engineering structures is reviewed. The major focus is on the detection of vibrations on a steel bridge model using sensors.
