Abstract

New coordination polymers based on copper(II) benzoate and pyridinecarboxylate compounds bridged by 3-pyridylmethanol, [CuX 2(μ-3PM) 2] n (where X = 2-methyltionicotinate (2-MeSnic) or 2-chlorobenzooate (2-Clbz) and [Cu 3(2-Clnic) 6(μ-3PM) 4(3PM) 2] n (2-Clnic = 2-chloronicotinate) have been prepared and spectroscopically studied. Both the [CuX 2(3PM) 2] n compounds seem to possess octahedral copper(II) stereochemistry with differing tetragonal distortions. X-ray analysis of [Cu(2-MeSnic) 2(μ-3PM) 2] n and [Cu(2-Clbz) 2(μ-3PM) 2] n was carried out and it featured tetragonal-bipyramidal geometry around the copper(II) atom. The compound [Cu(2-MeSnic) 2(μ-3PM) 2] n is one-dimensional coordination polymer. The compound [Cu(2-Clbz) 2(μ-3PM) 2] n is a two-dimensional coordination polymer. The compound [Cu 3(2-Clnic) 6(μ-3PM) 4(3PM) 2] n is 1-D “accordion chains” coordination polymer with different coordination environment around copper(II) atoms. The copper(II) atoms have tetragonal bipyramidal and tetragonal pyramidal environment.
