Abstract

We have demonstrated for the first time that aluminosilicate glasses with low dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent are prepared from the mixtures of blast furnace slag, quartz sand and a small amount of Al2O3. Fourier transform infrared, density and differential scanning calorimetry studies reveal the polymerization of the glass network with increasing SiO2 content. Dielectric measurements show that the increase in SiO2 content decreases the dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent. The most important melting properties of fiberglass melts (e.g., liquidus and fiber-forming temperatures) are also investigated in this letter. Results demonstrated in this work may open new opportunities to realizing blast furnace slags for electronic applications.
