Abstract

Biological Composites In article number 2106468, David Kisailus and co-workers study the structure–mechanical property relationships in the protective exoskeletal elytra of flying and terrestrial beetles. Comparison of elytra from two divergent species reveals variations in cuticle density, cuticle thickness, fiber arrangement, and degree of cross-linking resulting in variations in stiffness and fracture behavior. Z-pinning fibers also prevent delamination and improve and enhance toughness.
