Abstract

The dark and photoconduction behaviour of two disubstituted anthraquinones viz. 1, 2-Dihydroxy Anthraquinone (1,2-DHAQ) and 1,4-Dihydroxy Anthraquinone (1,4-DHAQ) is reported. The thin films of dyes were prepared by vacuum sublimation technique on a multielectrode surface type cell and studied in the vacuum of the order of 10 −5 Torr. It has been found that the photogeneration of charge carriers occurs via exciton process and their transport can be reasoned on the basis of band theory invoking deep and shallow traps in the forbidden zone. The dyes of found behave as n-type semiconductors. The results are sought to be rationalised in terms of the structure of the molecules, and the nature and position of the substituents in the molecules.
