Abstract

BaBPO 5:Sm 3+ powder phosphor was prepared by solid-state reaction method and then irradiated with X-rays to investigate effects of radiation on electronic valence states of Sm ions. Reduction of Sm 3+ to Sm 2+ occurred by the X-ray irradiation on Sm 3+:BaBPO 5. As-prepared and X-ray-irradiated BaBPO 5:Sm 3+ show different excitation and emission spectra of Sm 3+ and Sm 2+ depending on exposure time of the X-ray irradiation. It was found that the reduction of Sm 3+ after X-ray irradiation is very efficient and BaBPO 5 is found to be a suitable host for Sm 3+ → Sm 2+ conversion. The thermal stability, the photo-bleaching and the thermo-luminescence (TL) of Sm 2+ ions formed by X-ray irradiation were measured. The defect structures of Sm 2+ ions in BaBPO 5 have been discussed based on the experimental results.
