Abstract

Infrared and Raman spectra of cyclopropyl 2-pyridyl ketone, cyclopropyl 3-pyridyl ketone and cyclopropyl 4-pyridyl ketone are compared with Raman spectra of the corresponding pyridine carboxaldehydes and cyclopropyl methyl ketone. Correlations are supported by i.r. and Raman spectra of the α-deuterated cyclopropyl pyridyl ketones. No significant spectral changes indicative of multiple pyridyl—carbonyl or cyclopropyl—carbonyl bond conformations are observed in liquid, solid or low temperature spectra of the cyclopropyl pyridyl ketones or the pyridine carboxaldehydes. Additive conjugation of the pyridyl and cyclopropyl rings with the carbonyl bond is demonstrated to be maximal for the β-pyridyl compounds.
