Abstract

The crystal structure of three types of alkoxobridged copper(II) complexes with 2-(alkylthio)ethanol were determined by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method. {Cu(C 2H 5SCH 2CH 2O)Cl} 2 and {Cu(C 2SCH 2CH 2O)Br} 2 have planar alkoxobridged binuclear structures. {Cu(i-C 3H 7SCH 2CH 2O)Cl} 4 has a tetranuclear cubane structure in which two binuclear units are strongly bound to each other {CU(n-C 3H 7SCH 2CH 2O)Cl} 4 is a cubane-like tetranuclear molecule in which two binuclear units are loosely associated. It was confirmed that the relation between the structure and the magnetic and spectral properties observed for alkoxo-bridged copper(II) complexes with 2-(dialkylamino)ethanol is also valid for complexes of 2-(alkylthio)ethanol.
