Abstract

An anomalous evolution of lattice parameters in the Ce 1− x Y x PdAl pseudo-ternary compounds was observed with substitution parameter x at room temperature. The coexistence of two isostructural – hexagonal ZrNiAl-type – phases was observed for 0.4 ≤ x ≤ 0.6 that onsets instead of step-like change. Similar effect was observed for other RTX compounds with such crystal structure before, but not yet when the substitution is applied on the rare-earth position. This effect corroborates the idea of a region of forbidden c/ a ratio in RTX compounds of this crystal structure type, but this also makes it partly unsure since some samples from the Ce 1− x Y x PdAl series reach the forbidden values. If it is due to different range of forbidden c/ a values for Y-based compounds than for R-based ones, it cannot be decided at present stage
