Abstract

In the present study, YbCl3 crystals were obtained by the process of slow evaporation. They are characterised by SEM, XRD, UV–VIS, FTIR, luminescence, electrochemical analysis and impedance analysis. The crystal belongs to monoclinic crystal structure with lattice parameters a = 6.723 ± 0.02 Å, b = 11.640 ± 0.02 Å, c = 6.379 ± 0.02 Å and V = 499.19 Å3 and α = γ = 90˚; β = 110.45˚. Average crystallite size is 28.89 nm. SEM shows elongated torpedo shape rods morphology. The energy gap is 4.41 eV and refractive index is 2.095. The electrochemical performances has shown that the electrolyte exhibits wider potential window of 3.05 V and the process is irreversible due to an electron transfer process. Impedance analysis indicates the high contribution of charge transfer resistance.
