Abstract

Gadolinium oxyorthosilicate single crystal (Gd2SiO5: Tb3+, GSO:Tb) was obtained by the optical floating zone (OFZ) technique. The crystal was pulled at a fast growth rates (15 mm/h) in air. The structural characterization is made by XRD, Raman and IR, which proves the crystal having a high degree of crystallinity and monoclinic nature. XPS and EDS results show neither impurity nor element segregation in the crystal. The optical characterization, accomplished by absorption and photoluminescence spectra suggests a strong absorption in 200 nm ∼400 nm (related to Gd3+ 8S7/2→6G/D/I/PJ) and a bright green emission centered at 548 nm(related to Tb3+ 5D4→7FJ). All this means a high quality Gd2SiO5:Tb3+ crystal could be obtained by optical floating zone method.
