Abstract

Considerable structural and numerical chromosomal variation has been found in natural populations ofAlopecurus. Interchange heterozygotes, identified by multivalent formation during meiosis, have been recovered in four out of six species studied and are reported for the first time in the diploidsA. bulbosus, andA. myosuroides, and the tetraploidA. pratensis. B chromosomes have been found in two species,A. pratensis andA. myosuroides and also in inter-specific hybrids betweenA. pratensis andA. arundinaceus. The characteristics, distribution and meiotic behaviour of both interchange heterozygotes and B chromosomes are described.
