Abstract
Zirconia ceramics have gained favour as restorative materials because of their excellent mechanical properties; they have high strength and toughness, good biocompatibility, and relatively good aesthetic properties. But the problem with zirconia is inertness with the body fluid and it resists the formation of bonds with bones and tissues. This problem can be minimized by some biocompatible additives. Sucrose was added in pre-synthesized zirconia with different amounts (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25ml). Formation of tetragonal phase (t-phase) was investigated at different stages of the process by XRD. Optimized sample has been calcined at 100–500oC. Polymer added zirconia thin films exhibit relative high value of x-ray density and very low porosity (∼3%). Mechanical properties of the samples were characterized at room temperature by micro Vickers hardness tester. Hardness of the samples is in the range of 800HV to 1600HV. Relatively high value of hardness is observed in thin film with polymer amount of 10ml along with pure tetragonal zirconia. This phase-pure tetragonal zirconia is achieved without any heat treatment and persisted up to a temperature of 500oC.
