Abstract

A new system of RCo12-xAlx (R=Y, Sm and Gd) compounds with TbCu7-type structure has been successfully synthesised. Both thermomagnetic analysis and x-ray diffraction measurements show that all the compounds are almost of single phase and crystallize in the TbCu7-type structure. The Curie temperature TC is 921 K for YCo10.5Al1.5, 909 K for SmCo10.5Al1.5, 952 K for GdCo10.5Al1.5 and 1046K for GdCo11Al. X-ray diffraction patterns of magnetically aligned powder samples indicate that all compounds investigated exhibit uniaxial anisotropy at room temperature. The anisotropy fields and saturation magnetizations of these compounds have been obtained by means of singular point detection (SPD) technique and magnetic isotherm measurement, respectively.
