Abstract

The results of X-ray diffraction studies show that in the aluminium-rich system Lu(Fe x Al 1 − x ) 2 the cubic MgCu 2 type structure is stable up to x = 0.2. The X-ray line broadening observed for the compounds with x = 0.1, 0.2 is caused solely by the smeared-out values of the lattice parameters. The structure of the LuFeAl compound is of the hexagonal MgZn 2 type. The magnetic properties for the investigated cubic aluminium-rich Lu(Fe x Al 1 − x ) 2and Y(Fe x Al 1 − x ) 2 compounds were found to be similar. A maximum at T ≈ 8 K was observed in the susceptibility vs. temperature curve for the LuFeAl compound.
