Abstract
Structural and dynamic properties of confined water have been investigated by ‘‘in situ’’ neutron-scattering experiments. In the medium confinement regime (for MCM-41 host materials: 20 Å⩽∅⩽40 Å) confined water has rather similar properties to bulk (3d) water. The major difference concerns the solidification phase transition. Strong triple-point depression Δ T 3t is observed and Δ T 3t increases when decreasing the pore diameter ∅ (213 K⩽Δ T 3t⩽233 K). Such a confined water behaves as a supercooled liquid phase. The ultra-confinement (AlPO 4-N zeolites: 8 Å⩽∅⩽12 Å), is seen to induce the structuration of the confined water and its stability at room temperature T=300 K due to commensurability effect with the AlPO 4-5 inner surface. No wetting phenomena are observed for both host materials, the silicic MCM-41 samples and the AlPO 4-N zeolite family.
