Abstract

The way the streets and avenues are organized in a city may have a huge impact on the traffic flow. This paper presents a methodology to analyze topological characteristics of road networks. The study was performed by using two groups of neighborhoods divided according to the historical traffic problems. These areas were represented using graphs, thus making possible the application of some network metrics. The main goal of this process is to identify patterns associated with each one of these groups. It was observed that some parameters such as entropy, centrality and input and output node degree distribution can provide the indication of features that are directly related to the criticality of the traffic jam in the road structures.
