Abstract

AbstractOne of the problems encountered during the design of the ASR‐21 Catamaran is the determination of the effectiveness of the cross‐structure deck plating. In this paper, this problem is examined using the Finite Element Method. The behavior of a multicell box girder representing a catamaran cross‐structure is studied. Because of the relatively low length‐to‐breadth ratio of a typical catamaran cross‐structure, the deck plating effectiveness is found to be rather small. Parametric studies are performed, and curves of the effectiveness as a function of the relevant geometric and loading parameters are presented. These curves may be helpful in the early stages of new designs.
