Abstract

Octacalcium phosphate coatings substituted with different amounts of strontium were synthesized by electrochemical deposition, and variations in coating morphology, crystal structure, composition, solubility, and bioactivities were investigated. The physicochemical properties and bioactivities of the coatings were observed to be modulated by Sr2+ dopant in a dose-dependent manner. While enhanced cell proliferation was detected for substitution at 5% level and higher, unique elevated alkaline phosphatase activity was observed for the 1% Sr2+-substituted coating, indicating a superior osteoinductivity than observed with the other coatings. The electrolyte recipes also demonstrated a high affinity for Sr2+ substitution.
