Abstract

The possibility is shown of detecting magnetic dipole transitions with ΔT = 0 in light nuclei, even though such radiative transitions are very weak, in inelastic scattering of protons with energies greater than 100 MeV. Such transitions are shown to provide an excellent verification of the success of the impulse approximation in these inelastic scattering reactions. They enable the identification of a T = 0 magnetic dipole giant resonance of 12C, similar to the T = 1 magnetic dipole giant resonance which has already been identified.
