Abstract

Differential cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering of 8 and 10 MeV neutrons from 76,80Se have been measured with newly developed time-of-flight techniques. Emphasis was placed on the observation of inelastic scattering to the first excited 4 + and 3 − states and second excited 2 + states in each nucleus. The results are analyzed in a coupled-channel framework in which different collective models for the levels of the Se nuclei were tested. Deformation parameters were extracted for the first quadrupole and octupole state in each nucleus and compared with similar quantities obtained from (p, p′) and Coulomb excitation measurements. No single collective model is adequate to describe simultaneously all of the observations, but previously reported anomalies in the deformation parameters and isovector absorption term of the optical potential have been removed.
