Abstract

This paper presents in an experiential way the consequences of a massive cerebral vascular accident on an older person, and how this "event" impacts on each member of the family. Using David Kaplan and associates' model, the implications of early crisis intervention are explored, and the importance of timing, pacing, and sensitivity to each family member's needs are dealt with through the use of a fictionalized case study. The primary focus is on how a serious illness is experienced, what changes take place in the family's lifestyle, and how coping skills emerge.
