Abstract

Takayasu's arteritis is a nonspecific inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, affecting electively and segmentally arteries of large and medium diameters. It is the most common inflammatory diseases of the aorta. Young women are mainly involved. Here, we report the case of an eighteen-year-old female patient who presented a sudden right hemiplegia accompanied by a Broca's aphasia type. The brain CT-scan showed an ischemic area of the left carotid territory. Doppler ultrasonography of supra-aortic trunks showed typical images of Takayasu type endarteritis. She received 10 mg per kg of body weight of intraveinous methylprednisolone for three days, relayed by oral route of prednisone 1 mg per kg of body weight and physiotherapy and speech therapy. The outcome was favorable, marked by a recovery of the speech and the motor function on day 5. Takayasu's arteritis has to be evoked in case of stroke in young woman, in absence of cardiovascular risk factors.
