Abstract

Solid state detectors with digital position read-out have been developed to permit the simultaneous measurement of several angles, or the increase of solid angle without increasing the kinematic spread. The counters are large area ion-implanted detectors with a common aluminum contact and a front contact consisting of five or twelve gold strips separated by 0.2 mm. The analogue-signal is taken in common for all strips from the aluminum contact, and from each strip the position information is picked off via a fast charge sensitive preamplifier. This information is reduced to digital form and stored in discriminator-coincidence-buffer units. At high count rates, these detectors provide immediately available position signals and they permit the elimination of errors and background arising from collimator scattering.
