Abstract

A one-dimensional (string) and a three-dimensional (slab) system of non-interacting fermions are studied. Peierls' result for the string energy is extended to the slab, where it assumes a different significance. Analytic expressions for the momentum distributions are given in the two cases, the attention being focussed on their tail and on their behaviour at the Fermi surface.
