Abstract

A theoretical elastic analysis of the stresses due to a moment applied to a pad reinforced nozzle in a spherical pressure vessel has been carried out. The results have been compared with experimental values obtained by applying an external moment of 49·78 kN/m (200 tons/in) to one nozzle, 0·41 m (16 in) outside diameter by 12·7 mm ( 1 2 in ) thick, in a spherical vessel, 1·83 m (72 in) outside diameter by 12·7 mm ( 1 2 in ) thick. The pad reinforcement was 9·5 mm ( 3 8 in ) thick and of 0·216 m (8·5 in) radial width. The experimental results confirm the theoretical analysis for the distribution of stresses except at regions near the welds where the effect of the welds on the stresses is significant.
