Abstract

In order to facilitate the interpretation of a class of fatigue test results, i.e. to predict the fatigue behaviour of local structural assemblies either under loadings that differ from the fatigue test loading in magnitude or in statistical distribution, or after a local change in structural sizes or design, stress concentrations m critically loaded assemblies are considered. In the case of joints using an array of fasteners, present investigations concern load distributions among fasteners and the stiffness coefficients used in analysis. The knowledge of the order of stress magnitude has permitted substantiation of the fatigue strength of aircraft structures, after local design changes needed to eliminate local weaknesses revealed during full-scale fatigue tests.
