Abstract

This paper develops a generic stress transform matrix to incorporate the well-known Spatially Mobilized Plane (SMP) criterion into the widely used framework of cavity expansion theory. The problems, both undrained and drained expansion of a cylindrical cavity, are formulated by transforming the elastoplastic constitutive relation of the anisotropic modified Cam-clay model using the proposed stress transform matrix. A simple but novel iterative algorithm is proposed to determine the real initial values for solving the governing equations. The proposed stress transform method is a generic approach which is also applicable to other cavity expansion solutions with Mises criterion based soil models.
