Abstract

The experimental results on creep of rocks cannot be analyzed in terms of the existing standard linear rheological models for creep. Recently Scheidegger presented a correspondence principle with a Kelvin material to obtain the constituent equations based on Lomnitz's law. However, the “modified Lomnitz's law” proposed by Jeffreys is in greater use for geophysical problems. As such, in the present paper the constituent equations for Jeffreys' law for transient creep are worked out on the same lines adopted by Scheidegger. The resulting equation is non-linear and has the features of both the Kelvin body and the Maxwell material.
