Abstract

This letter reports an experimental evidence of stress induced martensitic phase transformation (SIPT) in Ti60Cu14Ni12Sn4Ta10 nanostructured composite by using in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction technology. It has been found that SIPT from NiTi B2 to NiTi B19' phase took place in the eutectic structure which was composed of nanoscale rod-like β-Ti and ordered B2 NiTi phase together with a small amount of B19 and B19' NiTi phases. The SIPT was accomplished in the elastic deformation period, suggesting that the enhanced elastic strain up to 1.92% is attributed to the SIPT together with the elastic deformation of both β-Ti and CuTi2 phases.
