Abstract

The eta alpha martensitic transformation in large coherent Fe particles on a small-angle boundary in Cu-Fe alloy bicrystals has been induced by applying external stress at 77 K without activating lattice dislocations. Depending on the sense (tension or compression) of the applied stress, some particular variants of martensite are preferentially formed. The preferential formation of the variants can be explained by postulating that the applied stress helps the shear movement of atoms to change the lattice from fcc to bcc.
