Abstract

This paper provides the examination of stress in natural language with new empirical data. It describes a previously unnoticed phenomenon of stress variation in Polish compounds with monosyllabic heads. Those with disyllabic non-heads invariably undergo the rule Demoting, while those that have non-heads containing more than two syllables may undergo Demoting or be stressed by the Compound Stress Rule. It is hypothesized that the speaker's psychological perception of the compound as a compound or a non-compound influences his or her application of the appropriate stress placement rule.
