Abstract

Abstract There are a number of situations in which one wishes to determine either the normal or shearing stress in some particular direction without being required to establish the complete state of stress at any particular point. For example, if it is desired to evaluate the radial force at a given cross section of an aircraft propeller blade, this can be accomplished by multiplying the average radial stress by the area of cross section of the blade. This sounds simple, but it may involve the use of a great deal of equipment, especially under dynamic conditions when all strain observations, at all gage locations, may have to be made simultaneously.
