Abstract

13CrL80 stainless steel was tested for stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and pitting in both brine and dense phase CO2. The test system fed CO2 containing oxygen (5 and 60 ppmv O2) at a temperature of 85 ̊C and a pressure 190 bar to simulate formation water draw back in the tubing under closed in conditions. No SCC was observed for these conditions, and the mass loss corrosion rate was low (<18μm/y) and minimal pitting observed at 5ppm O2. More severe pitting was identified in 60 ppm, reaching up to 200 μm depth in coupons located in the denser phase CO2.
