Abstract

A phase field model is implemented and used to investigate the stress and strain build up during the isothermal formation of α” in near-β Ti alloys. The predicted strains suggest that α” can be considered as some deformed hcp α’. The formation of multi-variants self-accommodating triangular arrangements commonly observed in these alloys does not change the previous conclusion. Moreover, it is shown that diffusion, most likely of oxygen, is required to best reproduce the observed microstructures.
