Abstract

Early in my life I became fascinated by mylonites and their structural properties, especially S‐C fabrics. Given my undergraduate physics education, it dawned on me how little I really knew, so I began to study continuum mechanics, thermodynamics, and mathematics. After 6 years, I looked back. Too many aspects in deformation theory had been thrust down my throat by grade pressure, but they were not self‐evident for me. From the first day on, I missed any mention of thermodynamic principles in the stress theory. Isn't elastic deformation a change of state, be it volume change or just change of shape?
