Abstract

Upwardly mobile black families were examined in an attempt to ascertain the possible relationships between stress, economic mobility and kin network support within their sociallinteractional systems. Despite high ratings on stress and high frequencies of major life change events most families studied exhibited high levels of satisfaction with family life situations. Families upwardly mobile over three generations and in the highest social status classification had the lowest stress scores. Kin support systems greatly facilitated stress management.
