Abstract
The name milleri has been used mainly by British and European microbiologists to describe a heterogeneous group of streptococci known by a variety of species names in the United States. Recently a proposal was made to combine these various types of streptococci into a single species named Streptococcus anginosus (8). In spite of the confusion about what to call these streptococci, they have emerged as important etiologic agents in a variety of serious infections (18). This article describes the bacteriological and clinical features of this group of streptococci in the hope of enhancing the clinical microbiologist's ability to recognize these organisms when encountered in the laboratory.
