Abstract

Abstract Two species of streptococci are of zoonotic interest: Streptococcus suis and S. zooepidemicus. Pigs are the primary hosts of S. suis, and human disease is concentrated in people who have contact with pigs or pork. The main human disease from S. suis is meningitis. Streptococcus zooepidemicus causes pharyngitis in humans, complicated rarely by glomerulonephritis. In these cases, the source is unpasteurized milk. Cattle and horses are natural hosts, but other species may also have pyogenic infections. All the pyogenic (beta- haemolytic) streptococci of clinical significance have animal connections, sometimes by disease and often by sharing group antigens. Penicillin is the mainstay of treatment and the prevention of human disease is by milk pasteurization and hygiene in the meat industry.
